Story summary: China's Growing Pains Wrenching environmental problems are plaguing the world's newest industrial powerhouse. If everyone in China lived like Americans, we'd need three planet Earths to sustain that level of consumption. With numbers like that, the world's environment hangs in the balance. this image: China's Growing Pains - Unbearbale A man from China's Hebei Province hides his face but not his affliction: skin disease caused by zinc leeching into his village's ground water. If he showed his face, he was certain he would be jailed. Meanwhile the owners of the pollution spewing local factory remain free and unmolested by the government.
