I cannot imagine a better photograph to accompany the headline “Beyond Denial.” The dislocation between the mother and the child, the way that she almost seems to be disowning him or her, the fact that you cannot see the mother’s face all add up to the perfect choice for the story. This entry rose to the top of all the Pope stories. Edit showed restraint that allowed good photos to run with appropriate size. – Like the first place image, the compelling picture and minimal use of type allows the photo to tell the story.
