Miners walk home along a dirt road March 29, 2006 in the gold mining town of Mongbwalu, Congo. The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), a country roughly the size of Western Europe, has virtually no paved roads. A 50 mile trip can take up to seven hours by car, in effect isolating communities and towns throughout the country. The Congo is struggling to hold Presidential elections this summer. The volatile East of the country, which is situated hundreds of miles from the capital Kinshasa, has been the focal point of continued violence. Numerous militias and warlords have vied for control of the mineral rich eastern Congo for decades, creating instability and continued bloodshed.
