All of the 2,400 women who enlist in the U.S. Marine Corps each year train at Parris Island, S.C. Joined as sisters of the Corps, they hope to enter a fighting force which is about 94 percent male.
A small arrival of female Marine recruits call their next of kin while a bevy of male recruits wait behind them moments after arriving on Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island. The short, scripted call is a breaking point for many early arrivals. They can hear their families, but are not allowed to give any personal response.
